Bankruptcy Advice You Can Put To Use | Siben & Siben Long Island ...

TIP! You need to educate yourself on the differences between Chapter 7 and Chapter 13. In Chapter 7 bankruptcy, your debts are all eliminated.

When someone has to file for bankruptcy, it is never a good thing. It is a difficult and embarrassing process that no one wants to go through. Don?t give into it and be sure to use this advice to figure out what you need to know to avoid bankruptcy.

TIP! Take the time to find the best bankruptcy attorney around. A lot of rookie lawyers get their start in bankruptcy law.

You should never pay for your first consultation with a bankruptcy attorney. Make the most of this free consultation by asking lots of questions. Most attorneys offer free consultations, so meet with a number of them before you retain one. Don?t hire an attorney who fails to address all your concerns and questions. Take your time choosing the right attorney to assist in your bankruptcy. So you have sufficient time to speak with a number of lawyers.

TIP! If you file for bankruptcy, do not feel ashamed. A lot of people feel depressed and as if they have failed when they seek bankruptcy.

Do not make the assumption that every dollar of debt will be disscharged in a Chapter 7 case. Some debts require you to reaffirm them by signing a new repayment agreement, while some others are very rarely dischargeable at all. Some debts that aren?t dischargeable include child support, student loans, and alimony.

TIP! Prior to putting in the bankruptcy paperwork, determine what assets are protected from seizure. The Bankruptcy Code lists the kinds of assets which are exempted when it comes to the bankruptcy process.

If you are planning to file for bankruptcy in the immediate future, you should refrain from taking out cash advances via your credit cards. That is considered fraudulent behavior, and you can still have to pay the credit card back, bankruptcy or no.

TIP! Scour your brain for any questions you can think of, then bring them to lawyers you consult with. Every second counts (and costs) when you are speaking to a lawyer.

There is hope! Filing for bankruptcy may allow you to get back property, such as an auto, jewelry, or electronics, that you may have had repossessed. If you have any property in repossession that was taken less than three months before filing for bankruptcy, then there are good odds that you can get your property back. Discuss your options with a good lawyer who can help you with the filing of your bankruptcy petition.

TIP! Many people find that they must file for bankruptcy protection because they have more debt than they can afford to repay. If you are in this position, you need to be familiar with the laws in your area.

Typically, people who have faced bankruptcy swear off credit cards. The fallacy in this thinking is that credit is needed to improve your credit history again. Good credit is needed to make major purchases, such as those for homes and automobiles. However, if you don?t use credit, you will be unable to establish a good credit history, which is necessary in order to make those purchases. Start with having a single credit card to help you go in the proper direction.

TIP! Be honest no matter what happens during your filing for bankruptcy. Lying concerning your financial situation will not help you out of this situation.

Think through your decision to file for bankruptcy carefully before going ahead with it. You have other options available like consumer credit counselling services. Bankruptcy permanently affects your credit, so avoid filing until you have exhausted all of your other options.

TIP! Don?t just give your paperwork to your lawyer and not follow up afterward. They know about the current bankruptcy laws, but you need to become well-informed too.

People fear that filing for bankruptcy will make future credit impossible. However, sometime it is actually easier to get a loan as compared to someone who has loan which are in default. You must be sure to stay on time with payments after filing, to reestablish a positive credit score again.

TIP! Don?t believe that you?re going to be able to discharge your tax bill. Some people think they can claim bankruptcy after charging the taxes owed on their credit card.

Depending on your current financial situation, it may or may not be necessary for you to file for bankruptcy. The information contained in this article can help you to avoid having to file for bankruptcy. You can turn your life around and protect your financial position if you make use of wise bankruptcy advice like the suggestions presented above

Sweet Dog Nurses Kitten Back to Heath | Babble Pets

iStock 000014520803XSmall 300x204 Sweet Dog Takes In an Abandoned Kitten and Nurses It Back to Heath

not the actual dog & cat in the story, but they're cute too

There are sometimes I am so over the sad stories I hear in the news ? both human news and pet news. It seems to be all we hear lately and well, that can start breaking our hearts the more we hear them.

Then, once in a while I come across a story that just warms my heart. It stands out from the rest of the sad news and can remind me that the world is a super sweet place.

A story came out a few days ago from?Minnesota and it involves two of the cutest creatures on the planet ? a dog and a tiny kitten.

A woman named Pat Weber owns a barn in?Jordan, about 40 miles southwest of Minneapolis and was enjoying the day with her grandson on September 24th, 2012. He was playing in the barn when he found a tiny kitten ? only about 2 inches long.

Weber says the tiny kitten was ?ice cold? but after feeling it move, she wrapped it up in a warm towel and brought it inside. That?s when the story gets adorable (promise, this isn?t a sad story about a forgotten kitten).

Weber has a 4-year old dog named?Mittens (aaw!) and when she heard the tiny kitten start to meow, she was interested. The tiny kitten nuzzled into Mittens, who started to lick her, and the kitten started?suckling, nursing on Mittens who hasn?t had her own litter for 2 years.

It took about 3 days for Mittens to start to produce milk according to Pat and ever since, Mittens has been a loving adopted mother to the tiny grey kitten who has been named Bootsie.

To see the actual cat and dog in the story, head to abc local and check out the cute!

Mars Water Mystery: NASA Rover's Ancient Streambed Discovery Is the Latest Clue

A NASA rover's discovery of an ancient streambed on Mars is exciting, but it?s far from the first solid evidence that the Red Planet was once a warmer and wetter place.

On Thursday (Sept. 27), scientists announced that the Curiosity rover had found rocky outcrops containing large and rounded stones cemented in a conglomerate matrix. The discovery suggests that water had flowed fast and relatively deep ? perhaps hip-deep, in fact ? through the area billions of years ago.

"This is the first time we're actually seeing water-transported gravel on Mars," Curiosity co-investigator William Dietrich, of the University of California, Berkeley, said in a statement.

But Curiosity's find didn't exactly surprise mission scientists. They chose to set the $2.5 billion robot down in the Red Planet's huge Gale Crater, after all, because Mars-orbiting spacecraft have spotted signs there of long-ago water activity ? from channels and alluvial fans to minerals that form in the presence of liquid water.

And these more recent observations build on evidence for a wet ancient Mars that goes back four decades and has been accumulating ever since. [The Search for Water on Mars (Photos)]

Eyes in the sky

Perhaps the first compelling signs that the Red Planet's surface ? a frigid and dry place today ? once harbored liquid water came from NASA's Mariner 9 spacecraft.

Mariner 9 launched toward Mars in May 1971 and later that year became the first probe ever to orbit another planet. Mariner 9's images showed canyons ? including the enormous Valles Marineris, which is named after the spacecraft ? and what appeared to be riverbeds.

A succession of other NASA orbiters ? from the twin Vikings in the mid-1970s to Mars Odyssey and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), which remain active today ? have spotted many more landforms that speak of long-ago erosion by liquid water.

MRO has observed streaks in the Red Planet's Newton Crater that shift over the course of a few months, suggesting that water might even be flowing seasonally on Mars today.

The evidence is also mineralogic as well as topographic. Instruments aboard MRO and other craft have detected water-associated minerals such as clays and sulfates in numerous locations across the Red Planet.

Ground-truthing

Over the past decade, rovers have ground-truthed some of the observations made from orbit, strengthening the case for a wet ancient Mars.

For example, NASA's Opportunity rover found multiple deposits of odd, iron-rich spherules after landing on the Red Planet in January 2004. These so-called "blueberries" are concretions created by the action of mineral-rich water inside rocks, scientists say.

Opportunity's twin, Spirit, discovered strong evidence of an ancient hydrothermal system near its landing site back in 2007. And last December, researchers announced that Opportunity had found a thin vein of gypsum while poking along the rim of Mars' Endeavour Crater.

"There was a fracture in the rock, water flowed through it, gypsum was precipitated from the water. End of story," Steve Squyres of Cornell University, Opportunity's principal investigator, told reporters at the time. "There's no ambiguity about this, and this is what makes it so cool."

Searching for habitable environments

Here on Earth, life thrives pretty much anywhere liquid water is found, which explains the intense interest in searching for signs of the stuff on Mars.

Indeed, the past decade or so of NASA's activities at the Red Planet have been geared toward "following the water." Curiosity's mission marks a transition to the next phase in the hunt for past or present Mars life: searching for habitable environments.

Curiosity is about 50 days into a two-year mission to determine if the Gale area can, or ever could, support microbial life. This is a long and involved process that requires more than the confirmation of an ancient streambed, researchers said.

"The question about habitability goes just beyond the simple observation of water on Mars to recreating the environments in greater detail, with an understanding of the chemistry that was going on at that time, to ask if this is the kind of place that micro-organisms could've lived," Curiosity chief scientist John Grotzinger, of Caltech in Pasadena, told reporters Thursday.

"That's still to be determined, and that's the research the team is working on," he added.

Curiosity's mission may also shed light on when and why Mars dried out long ago. Scientists plan to drive the 1-ton robot partway up Mount Sharp, which rises 3.4 miles (5.5 kilometers) into the Red Planet sky from Gale's center.

They're keen to explore Mount Sharp's base, which harbors clays and sulfates, orbital observations have shown. About 2,300 feet (700 meters) up, however, these deposits peter out. If Curiosity climbs high enough to cross this threshold, it could help scientists piece together a history of wet Mars, dry Mars and the transition between the two, researchers have said.

Tips To Recover From Pet Loss Grief - Just Articles Article Directory

Article by Elran Asher

A lot of people consider their pets to be part of the family. They even go out of their way to show how much they care and love their pets. So much so that when their pets die, it is common for these people to suffer from pet loss grief. Although suffering from pet loss grief is difficult, there are things you can do to fully recover from it. One of the first things you can do to overcome pet loss grief is avoid downplaying the grief you are feeling. When your pet dies, you need to remember that you lost more than just a pet you fed twice a day and walked around the neighborhood with. You lost a friend and a valued member of your family. Admitting this is a huge, sad event in your life is better than trying to downplay your grief and bottling your true emotions. Facing the reality that you have lost a part of your family is a great first step towards recovery.

Another way you can recover from grief is to always remember the pet you lost. People who suffer from lengthy pet loss grief are those who try their best to ?forget? their pets. The more you try to put the thought of losing a friend out of your mind, the more difficult it is to let go of your grief. Trying to ?forget? also sets aside the life your pet has lived and you should always remember how wonderful it had been to have them around. The more you remember the good times, the easier it is to move on. You also need to talk to someone. It?s not unheard of for some people to undergo Christian counseling and even therapy. You will be surprised at how much talking to someone who understands what you are going through and providing support through this difficult time can help you recover. It doesn?t have to be a formal counselor or therapist in fact; you can talk to relatives or close friends even.

Lastly, you need to be patient with yourself. Healing from grief doesn?t happen overnight, which is something you have to understand. Full recovery from pet loss grief can take weeks or even months, some a few years even. This depends on how you go about the process of healing. Try to occupy yourself with other things as you go along. If you want to help out people who are suffering from the same situation, you can look into becoming a grief counselor and check out training programs offered in websites such as http://www.aihcp.org/. Not only will you occupy yourself with something worthy, the training you will get from these organizations is also a great way to overcome your grief over losing your beloved pet. You just need to be very patient with yourself and surround yourself with people who care for you, love you and can provide the emotional support you will need a lot of during your healing process.

Make Your Home Improvement Projects Easier With These Quick ...

If you really find this article helpful Give it a PLUS from below and help us to spread it.

No matter how much knowledge you have, home improvement can always be daunting. Do not allow the TV home improvement shows fool you. Home improvements consist of more than just huge jobs. This can even be entertaining, find out how.

When did you last look over every door handle in the home you live in? Brass door handles shine immensely, and they make for a fantastic improvement in your home decor. Inspect each handle in your rooms and replace them with brass hardware instead.

Exhaust fans should be installed in cooking areas, in the laundry room and in every bathroom. Venting this air will drastically reduce the probability of mildew and mold invading your home. Also, you can halt condensation that can collect inside walls, thus preventing rot.

Making your ceiling appear higher than it is can be accomplished using two very simple tips. Try painting stripes on the wall or you can just add a taller floor lamp. If you do this in the room, you will make the eyes follow that pattern. The lines will really make the ceiling seem taller than it really is.

Reckon about insulating your home for your next huge project. Place in weather stripping around your windows and doors. Reducing air leaks in your home can help your air conditioner and heater run more efficiently, lowering your costs to run them. This will save lots of money on energy costs in the long run.

As you interview home improvement contractors, be sure to take the time to research their backgrounds and completed projects. Question if they have any experience with homes similar to yours. Have they worked on similar projects to the ones you want in terms of work and price? Check out their complete portfolio so you can determine if their work will be effective for your home.

Have a qualified electrician do work such as installing the electrical outlet for microwaves that are above stoves if you want to get the best results. This can make plugging your microwave in really simple, and the cord won?t be easily visible. This will eliminate unsightly cords from your kitchen.

Need to stick to a budget? Consider a granite tile countertop. A stylish granite slab countertop can cost up to $5,000. Tiles on the other hand, are much cheaper. This will give you the look you desire without paying so much money.

Take care of your septic tank. There are a lot of chemicals you can buy to accelerate the decomposition process. Avoid touching your home?s septic tank during improvements at all costs. It would be wise to have a set of plans for your home so you can avoid hurts.

Hire an interior designer if you can afford it. Their trained eye can help you design a look that is perfect for you and gets you the most for your money. Hiring a professional will take off the burden of going it alone.

Are insects making your backyard unlivable? You may want to consider adding a gorgeous screened enclosure to your home. This will allow you to be outside without being annoyed by bugs. For added comfort you can install a ceiling fan.

As you?ve seen, you have many different projects you can perform. Hopefully, you now have more confidence in your ability to tackle home improvement projects. You will have a real sense of pride if you do.

White matter, old dogs, and new tricks

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

Most people equate "gray matter" with the brain and its higher functions, such as sensation and perception, but this is only one part of the anatomical puzzle inside our heads. Another cerebral component is the white matter, which makes up about half the brain by volume and serves as the communications network.

The gray matter, with its densely packed nerve cell bodies, does the thinking, the computing, the decision-making. But projecting from these cell bodies are the axons?the network cables. They constitute the white matter. Its color derives from myelin--a fat that wraps around the axons, acting like insulation.

Alex Schelgel, first author on a paper in the August 2012 Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, has been using the white matter as a landscape on which to study brain function. An important result of the research is showing that you can indeed "teach old dogs new tricks." The brain you have as an adult is not necessarily the brain you are always going to have. It can still change, even for the better.

"This work is contributing to a new understanding that the brain stays this plastic organ throughout your life, capable of change," Schlegel says. "Knowing what actually happens in the organization of the brain when you are learning has implications for the development of new models of learning as well as potential interventions in cases of stroke and brain damage."

Schlegel is a graduate student working under Peter Tse, an associate professor of psychological and brain sciences and a coauthor on the paper. "This study was Peter's idea," Schlegel says. "He wanted to know if we could see white matter change as a result of a long-term learning process. Chinese seemed to him like the most intensive learning experience he could think of."

Twenty-seven Dartmouth students were enrolled in a nine-month Chinese language course between 2007 and 2009, enabling Schlegel to study their white matter in action. While many neuroscientists use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in brain studies, Schlegel turned to a new MRI technology, called diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). He used DTI to measure the diffusion of water in axons, tracking the communication pathways in the brain. Restrictions in this diffusion can indicate that more myelin has wrapped around an axon.

"An increase in myelination tells us that axons are being used more, transmitting messages between processing areas," Schlegel says. "It means there is an active process under way."

Their data suggest that white matter myelination is precisely what was seen among the language students. There is a structural change that goes along with this learning process. While some studies have shown that changes in white matter occurred with learning, these observations were made in simple skill learning and strictly on a "before and after" basis.

"This was the first study looking at a really complex, long-term learning process over time, actually looking at changes in individuals as they learn a task," says Schlegel. "You have a much stronger causal argument when you can do that."

The work demonstrates that significant changes are occurring in adults who are learning. The structure of their brains undergoes change.

"This flies in the face of all these traditional views that all structural development happens in infancy, early in childhood," Schlegel says. "Now that we actually do have tools to watch a brain change, we are discovering that in many cases the brain can be just as malleable as an adult as it is when you are a child or an adolescent."

Feeling guilty versus feeling angry: Who can tell the difference?

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? When you rear-end the car in front of you at a stoplight, you may feel a mix of different emotions such as anger, anxiety, and guilt. The person whose car you rear-ended may feel angered and frustrated by your carelessness, but it's unlikely that he'll feel much guilt.

The ability to identify and distinguish between negative emotions helps us address the problem that led to those emotions in the first place. But while some people can tell the difference between feeling angry and guilty, others may not be able to separate the two. Distinguishing between anger and frustration is even harder.

In a study forthcoming in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, psychological scientist Emre Demiralp of the University of Michigan and his colleagues hypothesized that clinically depressed people would be less able to discriminate between different types of negative emotions compared to healthy individuals. Clinically depressed people often experience feelings of sadness, anger, fear, or frustration that interfere with everyday life.

"It is difficult to improve your life without knowing whether you are sad or angry about some aspect of it," says Demiralp. "For example, imagine not having a gauge independently indicating the gasoline level of your car. It would be challenging to know when to stop for gas. We wanted to investigate whether people with clinical depression had emotional gauges that were informative and whether they experienced emotions with the same level of specificity and differentiation as healthy people."

The researchers recruited 106 people between the ages of 18 and 40 to participate in their study. Half of the participants were diagnosed with clinical depression and half were not. Over the course of seven to eight days, they carried a Palm Pilot, which prompted them to record emotions at 56 random times during the day. To report their emotions, they marked the degree to which they felt seven negative emotions (sad, anxious, angry, frustrated, ashamed, disgusted, and guilty) and four positive emotions (happy, excited, alert, and active) on a scale from one to four.

Demiralp and his colleagues looked at participants' tendency to give multiple emotions (e.g., disgusted and frustrated) similar rankings at a given point in time. According to their methodology, the more two emotions were reported together the less the person differentiated between these emotions.

The researchers found that clinically depressed people had less differentiated negative emotions than those who were healthy, supporting their hypothesis. Notably, they did not find the same difference between groups for positive emotions -- people with and without diagnosed clinical depression were equally able to differentiate between positive emotions. It is possible that people who are clinically depressed differentiate more between positive emotions as a coping mechanism.

Demiralp and his colleagues argue that the procedure used in the study to record emotions may be particularly useful in studying the emotional experience of clinically depressed people, paving the way for more treatment and therapy options in the future.

"Our results suggest that being specific about your negative emotions might be good for you," says Demiralp. "It might be best to avoid thinking that you are feeling generally bad or unpleasant. Be specific. Is it anger, shame, guilt or some other emotion? This can help you circumvent it and improve your life. It is one of our overarching goals to investigate approaches for facilitating this kind of emotional intelligence at a large scale in the population."

Titans get 1st win, beating Lions 44-41 in OT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Rob Bironas kicked a 26-yard field goal in overtime, and the Titans stopped backup quarterback Shaun Hill on fourth-and-1 at the Tennessee 7 to finally pull out a 44-41 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

The Titans (1-2) blew a 20-9 halftime lead in a crazy game featuring big plays, scoring swings and some suspect officiating. Detroit scored 18 straight points, then Tennessee answered with 21 points before the Lions scored the final 14 of regulation ? including the tying touchdown on a tipped desperation pass.

Detroit also recovered an onside kick and got an assist from officials who did not review a possible turnover.

A total of 46 points came in the fourth period, then in overtime, Bironas' third field goal put Tennessee ahead to stay after a drive that got its own boost from the replacement officials.

They announced a replay review had overturned their ruling of a catch on the field by Tennessee tight end Craig Stevens, with the ball hitting the ground as he rolled after being hit helmet to helmet by Lions linebacker Stephen Tulloch.

After spending several minutes discussing where to place the ball, they put it down at the Lions 29, giving the Titans 27 yards. The penalty apparently was marched off from the Detroit 44 instead of the Tennessee 44, where the play started.

The Lions (1-2) lost their second straight when coach Jim Schwartz decided not to let Jason Hanson kick his fifth field goal. Hill, in for injured Matthew Stafford, was stopped by defensive tackles Jurrell Casey and Sen'Derrick Marks on his sneak, and Tennessee escaped, celebrating wildly even as an official stood over the ball before a replay review was announced.

Players from both teams met in the middle of the field talking and shaking hands before an official finally announced the game was over.

The game featured six plays of 46 yards or longer, with the Titans having five of those ? all 61 or longer. The Titans even had three of those 71 yards or longer.

Hill's 46-yard TD pass to Titus Young at the end of regulation tied the game only after some more confusing officiating.

After Hill tossed a 3-yard TD pass to Calvin Johnson with 18 seconds left, Amari Spievey recovered Detroit's onside kick. Hill threw a short pass to the sideline to Nate Burleson who took at least a step before losing the ball when hit by Titans cornerback Jason McCourty.

An official threw down his bean bag, indicating a change of possession. Titans cornerback Alterraun Verner picked up the ball and started to run to the end zone before another official ran up and called it incomplete.

Because it was in the final 2 minutes, a review is left up to the officials and coaches cannot challenge. No replay review was done.

Darius Reynaud set a Tennessee record returning a kickoff 105 yards to tie it at 27. Akeem Ayers then sacked Stafford, forcing the Lions to punt, and Locker found Nate Washington, who plucked the ball from behind cornerback Jacob Lacey's back and ran 71 yards for the go-ahead TD with 3:11 left.

Hearing Tests for Children | ArticleBro.com

Hearing tests for children are a typical part of routine check-ups conducted by general practitioners. A hearing test is usually administered at infancy and repeated on a yearly or bi-yearly basis as the child grows and develops. Proper and routine hearing tests are crucial to the wellbeing of every child. Undetected hearing loss in a child can lead to improper development including permanent speech impediments and delayed learning. With new technology, hearing clinics can effectively conduct hearing tests in children of all ages, including infants.
If it often difficult to determine whether a child has hearing loss. Some signs that your child needs a hearing test include speech delay, common ear infections, family history of hearing loss and poor school performance. Additionally, hearing tests may be conducted if your child has been diagnosed with a learning disability or syndrome associated with hearing loss (down syndrome, for example) or if he or she has had an infectious disease or has received medical treatment where hearing loss is a side effect. With these scenarios, hearing clinics can provide a better assessment of and solution for hearing impairment.
There are currently several different types of hearing tests for children, all available at most hearing clinics. Objective tests are one form of hearing tests which require no feedback from the patient. These hearing tests can be conducted through a variety of means and are an ideal hearing test for infants.
Behavioural observation audiometry hearing tests are another form of hearing test for younger children. They involve using an instrument such as a rattle or music box to make noise and observing the child?s response. This hearing test is commonly conducted at hearing clinics and is mostly used for babies under seven months of age.
Visual reinforcement audiometry hearing tests involve pairing sounds with visual reinforcement. Speakers are placed on either side of the child and when a noise is produced the child will instinctively turn his or her head toward the source of the sound. When the child turns his or her head a visual stimulus (such as a puppet) is displayed and used as positive reinforcement for the behaviour. This form of hearing test can be used for babies as young as five months; however, because it uses speakers, it is not extremely effective in assessing the hearing for each ear individually. If the child is willing to participate, headphones can be used which allow for a more accurate judgement of the hearing in each ear.
The last type of hearing test commonly used in hearing clinics is play audiometry. This hearing test requires the child to move an object or set an object in a certain place when instructed to do so. For example, an audiologist may tell a child to put a block in a bucket. This instruction continues as the instructing voice gets quieter and quieter. This type of hearing test is commonly used for children aged three to five years.

Dot Earth Blog: Glacier Retreat Prompts Vatican Approval of New Alpine Ice Prayer

5:30 p.m. | Updated with a tweet |Jack Cushman, a Times journalist with a longstanding interest in the environment, just sent me a recent National Geographic web feature on a Vatican decision, prompted by the warming climate, to approve a change in a centuries-old annual Catholic ritual and prayer in a couple of villages high in the Swiss Alps. The longstanding rite was aimed at stopping the rapid advance of nearby glaciers during a period now called the Little Ice Age. Now, with the glaciers rapidly retreating, the revised prayer speaks of the value of the ice.

Here?s a snippet:

?We prayed for the ice to recede, and our prayer worked?too well,? said Herbert Volken, mountain guide and mayor of Conches, the district that includes Fiesch.

In 2009 the local parish council petitioned the Vatican to allow a change in the wording of the prayer. A year later the Holy See agreed, and Volken hopes the new prayer will work as well as the last one.

The detailed piece brought back memories of my visit to the same region in 1993 to write a feature for Cond? Nast Traveler Magazine on how the vanishing of these great glaciers was challenging the identity of the Swiss. I reposted that feature in full here in 2008. Here?s the opening section, which hinted then at what has now been made official:

In 1818, the farmers who ranged cattle on the steep mountainsides above Brig, a small town in southern Switzerland, organized a religious procession to deter a looming catastrophe. They marched from the church up a steep valley to the Aletsch, the largest glacier in the Alps. The 16-mile-long river of ice, 3,000 feet deep at its center, was fed by the endless snows falling on the two-mile-high ramparts of the Aletschhorn, Jungfrau, Munch, and adjacent peaks. Through more than a century of unusually cold weather, glaciers throughout Europe had been advancing steadily, and now the great, grinding mass of the Aletsch was uprooting a forest and threatening to overwhelm the farmers? summer cottages and cow pastures. Priests led the way to the glacier?s gravel-encrusted snout. They prayed for divine intervention. A tall wooden cross was planted in the earth to turn back the ice.

The march to the glacier evolved into an annual rite. Finally, around 1865, the forces of nature complied. The cold spell, later dubbed the Little Ice Age, ended. The Aletsch began to retreat.

These days, in an ironic turnabout, some residents of Brig and surrounding alpine communities are quietly praying for the Aletsch to come back. Once the glacier began to withdraw, it never stopped. The ice has melted back more than a mile into the mountains from the spot where the cross was planted. It has lost more than 600 feet of thickness in places, and is still shrinking about 11 feet a year. The Aletsch is not alone. All told, the Swiss Alps have lost 50 percent of the mass of glacial ice that was there 130 years ago. And the melting continues. [Read the rest.]

You can get a nice look at the Aletsch glacier, the focus of my piece, here:

This Twitter comment is worth posting as an addendum:

I Created a FREE Virtual Scrapbook on Lifeables #Lifeables

I love taking pictures of my family, especially my kids. I want to capture special memories and remember them at certain stages in their lives, after all they are only going to be little for so long and then they?ll be all grown up (just thinking about that makes my heart sad).

When my kids were younger I did a good job at documenting it all. I would write everything down and have my pictures separated into the appropriate folders. Unfortunately, as they got older and I got busier it seemed to happen less and less. Unless of course you count my Facebook Status about my kiddos as documenting it, in which case all is right again. Can you relate?

If you are like me you have all your special memories/pictures spread across social networks, mobile phones and computers. I have often thought of scrolling through my posts to document things I want to remember but let?s be honest I don?t have the time to do it and even if I did I am almost certain that?s now how I would like to spend my free time. So you can imagine my delight when I heard about Lifeables.

Lifeables is a FREE service that goes through all of your content and handles the entire process of capturing, sorting through, organizing and displaying our family stories so that we can create a virtual scrapbook. I created my account and set it up to search through my Facebook page and it has already found posts for me to go through. I think it is super cool and I can?t wait to do more with it. What?s great is that you can choose to keep it private or share it with others. I love sharing our special moments with my family and friends whether they live near us or thousands of miles away because It allows them to stay actively engaged in our lives.

To check it out and/or get started, click HERE.

Rainfall easing drought in certain corn states

(AP) ? With hopes of a once-stellar corn crop dimmed by a summer of drought, Gerald Jenkins doesn't expect the unfolding harvest to burden his co-op's grain elevators, which are capable of storing 9 million bushels of the grain it buys from growers. Finding timely barges to ship it off may be another story.

The same drought that has punished the Midwest's corn and soybeans for months has lowered the Mississippi River that eases past the western Illinois co-op Jenkins oversees to levels unseen for nearly a quarter century. The shallower waterway ? notably from Memphis south to New Orleans ? has closed some portions of it while forcing shippers to cut the number of barges their towboats push and the amount of freight in each.

That means Jenkins may have to get in line to ship the Ursa Farmers Cooperative's goods on the Mississippi, which is among the major inland U.S. rivers that routinely move some 60 percent of the nation's grain exports each year.

"For us, we just have to be aware we just can't snap a finger and expect a barge to be here," he said. "Instead of two days to get a barge, it may take four or five."

Mitigating matters a bit is that there's less of a corn crop expected, no thanks to the drought that has been the nation's worst in decades but increasingly is showing signs of leveling off and, in some key farm states, easing.

The weekly U.S. Drought Monitor update released Thursday showed that recent rainfall benefited parts of the Corn Belt, coming too late to help already damaged corn crops but still likely to plump up maturing soybeans in the fields.

The report shows about one-fifth of the contiguous U.S. remains in the two worst categories of drought ? extreme and exceptional. The swath still dealing with exceptional drop dropped by less than half of a percentage point as of Tuesday, to 5.96 percent.

While virtually all of the key farming states remain gripped by some form of drought, the amount of Kansas still in the worst drought classification fell by 9 percentage points to 51.04 percent. About one-quarter of Missouri remains in extreme or exceptional drought, down more than 8 percentage points from a week earlier.

And in Iowa ? the nation's biggest corn producer ? nothing really has changed, with 66 percent of that state still in the two most serious forms of drought.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture as of Monday still listed half of the nation's corn crop in poor or very poor shape, down just 2 percentage points from a week earlier. Soybeans were faring a bit better, with 36 percent of that crop described as being in such condition, the same as the previous week.

About one-quarter of the nation's corn harvest is complete, nearly three times the average pace of the previous five years, the USDA said. Just 10 percent of the soybean crops have been reaped, more than double the typical harvest's speed.

Inland U.S. river shipping remains frustrating, given the drought's effects on key waterways.

A year since the Mississippi rose in some places to record levels, traffic along the river sometimes resembling a slow-motion freeway at times has been brought to a crawl, if not a congested mess. Several lower stretches have been closed, and barges have run aground. Other times, towboat pilots have had to wait at narrower channels for a barge to pass through in the opposite direction before easing their own way through, snarling traffic.

A stretch of the Mississippi reopened on Thursday north of St. Louis, five days after damage discovered to a structure near the river's busiest lock forced its closure, causing a traffic jam of dozens of vessels and hundreds of barges.

One estimate put barge industry losses at $1 billion the last time the Mississippi was this low, in 1988 ? little wonder why the Army Corps of Engineers has scrambled all summer to dredge, clearing shipping channels of silt and sediments while knocking down shallow spots.

Love and Sex | Dating | Help my Boyfriend's Hooked on Porn - SGM

Dating-help-my-boyfriend's-hooked-on-porn

(Dating) Is he Hooked on Porn? Your partner says his late night porn activities is harmless, but the experts tell us otherwise! By Ally Briscoe.

With an estimated 15 million monthly visitors to PornHub alone, the most popular adult video site and an estimated 420 million adult web pages online, there?s no telling who?s significant other is among them. ?For the person who has difficulty stopping, porn is only one click away,? says sex therapist Kevin B. Skinner, PhD., author of Treating Pornography Addiction. ?Countless free sites are currently streaming sex to desktops, iPad, notebooks and yes, 4G smartphones,? says Skinner. ?Even guys who haven?t watched porn in years see it online it and re-engage themselves.? But, while some guys are capable of using porn responsibly (once in a while for added pleasure) others watch it way too much which can lead to problems in your bedroom.

?Learning that their partner is addicted to pornography is especially devastating to a woman?s self-esteem and ability to trust,? says Skinner. ?And it?s perfectly natural to feel that way.? But, women should know that some scientist suggest the effects of porn on the brain are ?toxic? comparable only cocaine. One psychologist claimed ?prolonged exposure to pornography stimulates an active preference for depictions of group sex, sadomasochistic practices, and sexual contact with animals.

There?s no doubt that some people?s porn consumption gets them in trouble ? in the form of maxed-out credit cards, lost sleep, neglected responsibilities, or neglected loved ones. But Skinner is one who takes issue with calling the problem behavior involving porn just an addiction. ?Compulsive? is more right,? He tells SGM.

?Our findings suggest ? men who are exposed to virtual sex way too often lose the desire to have sex with their partners, says Wendy Maltz, Internationally recognized sex therapist and coauthor of ?The Porn Trap.? What going on is an obsessive compulsive cycle from which once in play is hard to break free. ?Trying NOT to think about something never really worked for me, and eventually I would get to a point where thoughts would get so intense that I couldn?t handle the pressure any longer,? says Alex, a recovering porn addict.

The problem maybe that some men don?t think that the things they see and hear affect them. Yet, we all know that good music, good movies and good books add value to our lives. They can relax us, educate us, move us or inspire us. Just as uplifting media can benefit us, pornographic images can negatively affect us.

Images are in no way neutral. They can persuade us. The Pornographers know that if they can get a persuasive image of their product in front of your partner during a highly emotional moment, it will sink into his subconscious mind. Advertising scientists are so good at what they do, they can predict just how much more of their product he will buy if he sees their ad.

Now that we initiated you with some hooked on porn facts, let?s explore if porn is negatively affecting your partner and if so, how to help him find his way back to being your exclusive sex slave.

AROUSAL ADDICTION
?When a man views a woman naked body for the first time or see a new sex act, his brain releases triple the pleasure hormone dopamine than when he sees someone he?s seen before,? explains Dr. Skinner. Unfortunately, the more hooked on porn he becomes, the more likely it is to lead to something scientist call arousal addiction. The arousal addiction consists of a man only getting excited when he feels as sexual act tops what he?s been exposed to in the past. ?Men can become so hooked on porn that it?s harder for them to get and maintain an erection when they?re seeing something familiar?like you, such as,? says Mrs. Waltz.

ENLIGHTEN HIM
You?ve notice his equipment flunking lately and there?s no other likely causes (such as illness or meds). He isn?t stressed or and there?s no other issues you can point too, porn maybe the perp. On a physical level frequent masturbation can train his penis to respond only to only to one type of stimulation. ?Men who masturbate get use to using more physical pressure than intercourse provides making sex with you harder to get stimulated or it dampens his libido and it?s harder for him to reach ejaculation,? Waltz says.

Because your boyfriend may not realize the link between porn and his performance in the bedroom you may need to educate him. The key, says Waltz, is to be firm, but not judgmental, or you?ll risk alienating him leading to him constructing a wall of defense. The best approach is to get the conversation started with something like, ?I recently read the porn may actually make men less likely to want to have sex with their partners. It?s really interesting how it messes with the mind of its? users.?

WORKING A SOLUTION
?An addiction to pornography is not always about the sex. It?s about attachment. Women threatened by porn can learn that the emotional connection only they can offer is a powerful means of helping their spouse to recover.? This addiction is embarrassing for many, and even though many people are affected, few get the help they need. So how can you help your mate? Make a plan to amp up your sex lives as a couple so he doesn?t feel like you?re accusing or targeting him,? suggest Waltz. ?After you?ve explained the math, tell him, ?Okay, let?s do this? You cut back on the porn a little, and in the meantime, we?ll both brainstorm new sex moves to keep things going.

Try things such as new lingerie that looks different from what you usually wear to bed or new sex positions that give a completely unexpected view. 1. Massage his balls while giving oral action. 2. Stroke his penis, grab his butt while kissing his nipples. 3. Trying flexing your pelvic muscles when he enters you and pull out and get back on it and pump him like crazy and pull out again ? driving him crazy. 4. Put ice in your mouth and slide your tongue up and down his penis and then take it in your mouth?Repeat as necessary. 5. Whisper dirty talk into his ear while demanding that he bangs you harder.
