Starting?Wednesday, young illegal immigrants can apply to work legally and live openly in the?U.S.? A new program initiated by President Obama started?Wednesday and thousands across the country are waiting in line to get approved. ?Now, many illegal immigrants have a chance to work without worrying about deportation.
Nebraska there's an estimated 10,000 immigrants that can apply. One of the requirements, they had to enter the country before the age of 15. ?Across the United States thousands are waiting in line. Waiting for their opportunity to legally work in the country. More than 1 and a half million young illegal immigrants can now apply for a two year work authorization.
"If we put ourselves in the shoes of an immigrant coming in and having really no hope like that it's certainly very depressing,?I think it's bad for the community, now?I think this opens up some real doors for these kids that?I think will really benefit our community," Max Graves?with the Center for Legal Immigration said.
Here's what people need to know. Only those under the age of 31 can apply. ?They had to come to the U.S. before the age of 15. They had to have lived in the country 5 continuous years and haven't committed any major crimes. They also must have attended school or graduated, or been a member in the military.
"These are kids that were brought here without their permission; they were minors, so to give them the opportunity to live free of fear is important," Curt Krueger?with Catholic Social Services said.
"I don't know of any area of law which children are punished for any violation by the parent," Graves said.
In Lincoln there are three community service agencies that will be providing assistance. Catholic Social Services, the Center for Legal Immigration Assistance and the Nebraska Domestic Violence Sexual Assault Coalition.
There will be a workshop on Sunday in Spanish at the Christo Rey?Parish near 42nd and J. Anyone can attend. They will talk about how you can apply and eligibility.
To be clear this program is not the Dream Act. That hasn't been approved by Congress. This was initiated by the President.
