Security giant Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems is shedding up to 350 employees.
The company is calling it a "voluntary separation program," involving employees in Maryland, and several other states by early next year.
Most of the eliminations will involve managers and directors with some of the reductions impacting non-management employees as well.
If not enough people accept the voluntary reduction the company will start mandating action by early next year.
Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems Director of Public Relations Jack Martin released the following statement Tuesday afternoon.
"Earlier today, employees were informed of a voluntary separation program to minimize the impact of a workforce reduction of up to 350 positions at our Electronic Systems facilities in Maryland and several other states by early next year. Eligible employees will receive details of the voluntary separation program in the next several days.
"The majority of the job eliminations will involve managers and directors, with some of the workforce reductions impacting non-management employees in various administrative support functions.
"This workforce reduction action is intended to improve the overall affordability of our products and systems and the infrastructure that supports them to enable us to remain competitive in the defense marketplace going forward.
"Should these voluntary efforts not fully address the staffing situation, we will initiate an involuntary reduction early next year to ensure our headcount is consistent with our current and anticipated business base.
"We do want to emphasize that any employees impacted by this workforce reduction will receive all separation and other benefits to which they are entitled and the company will also provide outplacement assistance to help anyone laid off involuntarily in their search for other employment, including at other Northrop Grumman facilities."?
