Looking for rp partner(s)

Hello Roleplay Gateway!

I'm looking for a roleplay buddy or a group to roleplay with :)

My interests are: anthro, pokemon, music, animal crossing, harvest moon, harry potter, eragon, and anything involving dragons or fluffy things.

If someone would like to start a group with me or RP with me one on one, comment on this thread, because I haven't been on here long enough to be allowed PMs.

I had an idea awhile back, about a forest of animals fighting off demon cats and I thought it was pretty legit, but the other RP site I presented the idea to didn't go along with it.

And I started a roleplay about a month ago about a hybrid of anthro/animal crossing/harvest moon and the characters just left, so I wouldn't mind starting it back up again on this site.

Well this is my first post outside the safety of the introduction thread, so bear with me if I sound absolutely ridiculous.

E. coli adapts to colonize plants

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? New research from the Institute of Food Research has given new clues as to how some E. coli strains, normally at home in mammalian gastrointestinal tracts, have adopted slightly different transmission strategies, with some being better adapted to live on plants than others.

In the light of recent outbreaks of food poisoning due to contamination of vegetables by dangerous strains of E. coli, this information will be useful to making sure our food remains safe.

E. coli is most at home in the warm, moist, nutrient-rich environment found in the gastrointestinal tract of warm-blooded animals. But to disperse from one host to another these bacteria must get out into the world. There is evidence that some E. coli can survive for several weeks outside the host, and even grow in water or soil. But it is on plant matter that E. coli colonisation has become a concern, as although most types of E. coli are harmless, the presence of pathogenic strains on fruit and vegetables presents a food safety risk.

To find out more, the IFR team took the first comprehensive look at the differences between the populations of E. coli growing on crop plants and populations in the mammalian gut. Funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, they took over 100 isolates from leafy parts of vegetables growing in fields in England. Analysis of these showed that even within the same field the E. coli population is diverse and complex. They then compared these isolates with a standard reference collection of E. coli taken from mammals, including humans, from different continents.

Profiling the two groups found a number of significant differences depending on the source of isolation. Compared to the habitat inside the gut, a leaf surface is a hostile environment for gut bacteria. The temperature fluctuates away from the constant 37 ?C inside our bodies, and there is a greater risk of drying out.

The researchers found that E. coli populations derived from plants tended to form biofilms more readily. Biofilms are complex structures formed by populations of bacteria coming together to make a thin film over a surface. They are held together by a protective extracellular matrix of proteins and sugars, and the researchers saw that there was also an increase in the production of components of this matrix in E. coli derived from the fields. These strains also used sucrose and other plant-derived sugars more than the E. coli populations derived from mammalian sources.

Biofilms might help to prevent E. coli drying out outside of its host and being able to take advantage of plant sugars could also aid their survival outside the main host, although overall the plant strains showed lower growth on the usual carbon sources E. coli uses.

An analysis showed that these differences are associated with previously defined phylogentic groups of E. coli showing that different environmental conditions have a selective effect in the evolution of different groups. While some have become more generalised, adapting to life outside the mammalian gut, others have remained specialised for life in this environment, avoiding the associated growth penalty.

"While it was known that different environments harboured different E. coli populations, we now have an idea on how and why this happens," said Sacha Lucchini. "Knowledge of the mechanisms involved in plant colonisation by E. coli provides targets for developing strategies aimed at preventing potentially dangerous E. coli strains from colonising vegetables, thus keeping them off our plates."

Obama, Romney Legal Teams At The Ready For Voting Disputes As ...

obama romney legal teams

The Obama and Romney legal teams are on standby for the coming election, ready to battle it out over disputed results in the already hotly contested race.

The Obama and Romney legal teams are (probably like the rest of us) remembering the epic nightmare unleashed on the United States back during the election of 2000, when a disputed state (Florida) held the results of the election in the balance for several weeks as the nation waited for word as to how the vote count in the swing state would be handled.

Ultimately, the Supreme Court stepped in and handed the election to former President Bush over Vice President Al Gore, and despite winning the popular vote for the election, Bush took office.

The intervening eight years were no picnic for most Americans, and by the time Obama took office in 2009, the country had suffered the effects of seemingly endless wars and endless recession, and an economy battered by regressive tax policies that caused income inequality to skyrocket and resemble the financial situation of the 1920s.

Reuters has analyzed the situation that the Obama and Romney legal teams are currently gearing up for, explaining how a neck and neck tie could precipitate a bitter battle for the White House when the polls close:

?With Obama and Romney in a virtual dead heat in the polls, the state-by-state race for president has a range of chaotic possibilities ??The mostly likely scenario is that there will be a clear winner on election night, or the next morning. But the closeness of the race raises the possibility of a range of less conclusive, more confusing scenarios ??Among them: a disputed result in a state because of voting delays, problems with ballots or vote counting.?

With the expected devastation from Hurricane Sandy emerging as a nightmare polling scenario, the Obama and Romney legal teams may be in for an even bigger fight than anyone has anticipated.

Al Gore's controversial defense of Obama

Democratic strategist Tad Devine spoke to the newswire, confirming that Obama and Romney?s legal teams should gear up just in case the dead heat becomes a contested race. Devine said that back in 2000, no one anticipated what Gore faced in the Florida dispute:

?We really weren?t ready for the level of dispute in 2000 ? We had a lawyer in every state, but we hadn?t gone out and found the best lawyers in the country to represent our cause.?

As the Obama and Romney teams prepare to battle, both sides say they are confident they will prevail in any legal voting dispute that may arise.

Windows Phone 8 handset UK availability and pricing detailed: free starting from ?21 per month

We've heard how Windows Phone 8 is all about you, and seen all the devices bearing the new OS at launch. What's left, however, is where you can get one on the other side of the pond and, more importantly, how much it's going to cost you. Nokia has separately announced that both the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 will be launching in the UK (and France) later this week. More specifically, though, it looks like every UK carrier will be getting at least three handsets, with the almost-ready-to-launch EE getting both of HTC and Nokia's handset pairs. We've got all the (current) pricing details and availability dates after the break.

(AP) ? Betty Anne Ward McCaskill, the mother of Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill and a political trailblazer in her own right, died Monday at her home in St. Louis after a long struggle with heart and kidney problems, the senator said.

The first-term Democratic senator, who is locked in a close re-election race with Republican Rep. Todd Akin, had canceled most of her campaign events starting last week to spend time with her 84-year-old mother. She said Saturday that her mother suffered from acute cardio-renal failure and had lost consciousness at several points in recent days.

"For some time, Mom's health has not been good, and our family takes comfort that she is now at rest," McCaskill said in a statement announcing her mother's death. "We were incredibly lucky to have a mother like her, a woman of great intellect and strength, who loved and nurtured, challenged and pushed, and was always there with wise counsel and great humor."

Long before her daughter entered Missouri politics, Betty Anne McCaskill had made her own mark in Democratic circles. McCaskill has recalled how her mother sent her children out on Halloween in 1960 with the door-to-door message: "Trick or treat and vote for JFK," referring to the Democratic presidential candidate, John F. Kennedy.

In 1970, she was appointed to the Missouri Commission on the Status of Women, which evaluated the opportunities for women in Missouri government, education and business. The next year, she became the first women elected to the Columbia, Mo., City Council. She also once served as president for the trustees of William Woods University in Fulton, her alma mater.

She ran unsuccessfully for the state House in 1978 against Republican Leroy Blunt, whose son Roy Blunt now serves as Missouri's other U.S. senator. She later began a career as a financial consultant for Waddell and Reed in Kansas City, after her husband, Bill, became ill.

In 2004, she helped her daughter's unsuccessful bid for governor by providing personal testimonies about the rising cost of medical care. She said at the time that her list of medicines had been steadily growing to the point that her costs far exceed her annual prescription drug coverage through private insurance.

During McCaskill's 2006 Senate campaign, her mother traveled around the state with her in an RV, appealing in particular to rural voters and seniors as she discussed the need to close coverage gaps in the Medicare prescription benefits. For this campaign, she recorded a video displayed on McCaskill's campaign website expressing her pride about the sentor's work trying to straighten out mismanagement of veterans' burial sites at Arlington National Cemetery.

The Senate race between McCaskill and Akin has been in the national spotlight since Akin remarked in mid-August that women's bodies have ways of avoiding pregnancy in "legitimate rape." Although he apoligized, McCaskill has highlighted the comment to portray Akin as an extremist and out of touch with women's issues. The Missouri Senate is one of several that could help determine party control of the U.S. Senate.

Akin expressed condolences in a written statement in which he said, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the whole McCaskill family right now."

In addition to Claire McCaskill, Betty Anne McCaskill is survived by two other daughters, Anne Moroh and Lisa Finn; one son, Will McCaskill; six grandchildren; along with step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday at the Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis.

BoE's Broadbent expects recovery in UK construction

LANCASTER (Reuters) - Britain's construction sector, the main drag on the economy so far this year, should improve soon, Bank of England policymaker Ben Broadbent said on Monday.

According to official data, Britain endured its second recession in four years between October 2011 and June 2012, when construction output slumped. Even in the third quarter, when the economy returned to growth, construction contracted while services and manufacturing output rose.

Rate-setters will decide next week whether to inject further stimulus into the economy on top of the 375 billion pounds approved since the start of the financial crisis.

In a speech on Monday, Broadbent said it was not "entirely clear that we had a double dip". The fact that, in his view, no boom preceded the "bust" in construction meant there was still spare capacity and room for the sector to grow, he said.

"The prospects for the construction sector look less unfavourable than they have been for a while," Broadbent said at the Lancaster University Management School in northern England.

The British construction sector - which accounts for less than 7 percent of GDP - was a victim of a global credit crunch, not a local boom beforehand, he said.

Broadbent, a former Goldman Sachs economist, noted that since 2008 it was the supply of mortgage debt, not the demand for it, that was driving activity in the British housing market.

Broadbent also defended inflation as the right target for the BoE's Monetary Policy Committee, noting that the MPC would continue to set policy in order to meet it.

The MPC will announce its monthly policy decision next week and Broadbent had already indicated his reluctance to vote for more quantitative easing (QE) asset purchases, saying in September that high inflation limited the central bank's scope to ease policy.

Broadbent told a regional newspaper that he had yet to reach a decision on another round of QE and said he doubted whether his fellow policymakers had done so either.

"I literally have not made up my mind and I doubt anybody else in the committee has, until they have seen everything and thought about it," he told the Lancashire Evening Post.

Annual inflation slowed to 2.2 percent in September, nearer the BoE's 2 percent target. MPC member Spencer Dale said in an interview released on Monday that inflation was sticky and he repeated his call for caution around more QE.

Comments by Dale and fellow policymaker Charlie Bean that the strong third-quarter growth was unlikely to persist suggested a decision by the central bank next week to hold fire on more bond-buying might be less clear-cut than many analysts had begun to believe.

Broadbent told the regional paper that markets suggest interest rates would stay low for some time. The Bank has held rates at a record low of 0.5 percent since March 2009.

"I will say no more than to point at what is in financial markets, that is that they are pretty flat for a pretty long time, as far as I can see," Broadbent said.

Huge Hurricane Sandy bears down on East Coast

HATTERAS ISLAND, North Carolina (Reuters) - Hurricane Sandy could be the biggest storm to hit the United States mainland when it comes ashore on Monday night, bringing strong winds and dangerous flooding to the East Coast from the mid-Atlantic states to New England, forecasters said on Sunday.

Sandy could have a brutal impact on major cities in the target zone like Boston, New York, Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, one of the most densely populated regions of the country.

New York City's subway, bus and train service will be suspended on Sunday evening, which could bring the country's financial nerve center to a standstill.

The major Wall Street exchanges said they planned to open as usual on Monday because they have alternate facilities they can use.

The Obama administration estimated it could affect 50 million people, and the storm was already disrupting transportation systems.

More than 700 flights, including international ones, were canceled on Sunday and nearly 2,500 more were canceled for Monday, FlightAware.com said.

Forecasters said Sandy was a rare, hybrid "super storm" created by an Arctic jet stream wrapping itself around a tropical storm, possibly causing up to 12 inches of rain in some areas, as well as heavy snowfall inland.

"The size of this alone, affecting a heavily populated area, is going to be history making," said Jeff Masters, a hurricane specialist who writes a blog posted on the Weather Underground (www.wunderground.com)

New Jersey casinos were ordered to close. New Jersey officials were weighing whether to shut down that state's bus and rail systems, and emergency officials warned of widespread power outages that could last for days.

"We're just asking people to be patient and be ready for a long haul. But we have a very aggressive power restoration program in place and I think we're ready," Virginia Governor Robert McDonnell told the CNN program "State of the Union."

On its current projected track, Sandy is most likely to make landfall between in the New York/New Jersey area and head inland to Philadelphia and Pennsylvania, forecasters said.

EXCEPTIONALLY WIDE STORM

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami said the storm's impact would be felt far from the center.

While Sandy's 75 mph winds were not overwhelming for a hurricane, its width made it exceptional. Hurricane-force winds extended 175 miles from its center while its lesser tropical storm-force winds spanned 1,040 miles in diameter. It was not expected to strengthen but was expected to broaden.

At high tide, the storm could bring a surge of seawater up to 11 feet above normal levels to Long Island Sound and New York Harbor.

"Given the large wind field associated with Sandy, elevated water levels could span multiple tide cycles, resulting in repeated and extended periods of coastal and bayside flooding," the forecasters said.

Sandy was centered about 260 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, early on Sunday, the hurricane center said. The storm pushed seawater up over the barrier islands off North Carolina known as the Outer Banks.

"It's flooded all over the village," longtime Ocracoke Island resident Kathleen O'Neal told Reuters via telephone. "I would say between a foot and two feet of water."

Sandy was moving over the Atlantic parallel to the U.S. coast at 10 mph, but was forecast to make a tight westward turn toward the U.S. coast on Sunday night.

Tropical storm conditions were spreading across the coast of North Carolina on Sunday morning and gale-force winds are forecast to begin affecting Washington, New York and southern New England by Monday.

RECORD BREAKER

Sandy could be the largest storm to hit the United States, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) website.

Sandy killed at least 66 people as it made its way through the Caribbean islands, including 51 in Haiti, mostly from flash flooding and mudslides, according to authorities.

The approaching storm forced a change of plans for both presidential candidates ahead of the November 6 election. The White House said President Barack Obama canceled a campaign appearance in Virginia on Monday and another stop in Colorado on Tuesday, and will instead monitor the storm from Washington.

Republican challenger Mitt Romney rescheduled campaign events planned for Virginia on Sunday and was flying to Ohio instead.

All along the U.S. coast, worried residents packed stores, buying generators, candles, food and other supplies in anticipation of power outages. Some local governments announced schools would be closed on Monday and Tuesday.

"They're freaking out," said Joe Dautel, a clerk at a hardware store in Glenside, Pennsylvania. "I'm selling people four, five, six packs of batteries - when I had them."

New McCaskill ad declares: 'Todd Akin is scary'

ST. LOUIS (AP) ? Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill on Monday launched a Halloween-week ad casting her Republican challenger Todd Akin as "scary" because of his remarks about "legitimate rape." Akin, meanwhile, is gaining some outside help in his quest to oust Missouri's senior senator.

McCaskill's ad aired as Akin teamed up with Oklahoma Sen. James Inhofe for a series of campaign events in the St. Louis area. Inhofe was attending an energy roundtable discussion and fundraiser, then touring an aerospace and defense firm with Akin. On Tuesday and Wednesday, Akin was to campaign in the Kansas City area with former House speaker and presidential candidate Newt Gingrich.

McCaskill has not been on the campaign trail because she is spending time with her critically ill mother. But that hasn't stopped the first-term senator from launching new ads against Akin. Her latest begins with a woman proclaiming: "Todd Akin is scary." The ad then features a video clip from mid-August in which Akin says women rarely get pregnant from rape. Akin is shown saying: "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

Another woman in the ad says: "He has no idea how it even works and he wants to legislate about it?"

Akin has repeatedly apologized for his remark and said he was wrong, but the suburban St. Louis congressman has continued to campaign on his staunch opposition to abortion in all cases except when a woman's life is endangered.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee and other deep-pocketed GOP interest groups dropped their advertising plans for Akin after the rape remark, and top national Republicans such as presidential candidate Mitt Romney called on Akin to quit the race. Akin instead forged ahead with his campaign. He has received support from Republicans, such as Gingrich, but has not regained the backing of Romney or the GOP's Senate campaign committee.

Saturday's MLS roundup

By The Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:34 p.m. ET Oct. 27, 2012

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Chris Wondolowski tied the MLS single-season record with his 27th goal and the San Jose Earthquakes wrapped up the regular season with a 1-1 draw against the Portland Timbers on Saturday night.

Wondolowski scored in the 24th minute, matching the record set by Roy Lassiter of Tampa Bay in 1996. The 29-year-old forward booted a penalty kick into the lower left corner of the net after Portland goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts was whistled for taking out Steven Lenhart in a race to secure the ball.

San Jose (19-6-9) has already secured its second Supporters' Shield and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Earthquakes went undefeated in their last 10 matches and lead the league with 72 goals. They will face the winner of the Nov. 1 match between Los Angeles Galaxy and Vancouver Whitecaps in first round.

The Timbers (8-16-10) appeared to be going down to defeat in the cold, steady drizzle until Bright Dike scored his fifth goal in the 67th minute to tie the score and put some life into the Portland attack.

UNITED 1, FIRE 1, TIE

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (AP) - Lionard Pajoy scored in the 50th minute, and Bill Hamid made eight saves to help United rally to tie Chicago.

The draw gave D.C. second place in the Eastern Conference.

United (17-10-7) went 5-0-2 in its last seven matches to finish with 58 points, one more than New York and Chicago (17-11-6). New York finished third, ahead of fourth-place Chicago, on a tiebreaker.

With New York beating Philadelphia earlier in the day, the Fire needed to beat D.C. to avoid playing in the first-round one-game elimination round.

Instead, Chicago will host fifth-place Houston in that game Wednesday night. The winner plays Eastern Conference champion Kansas City in the second round.

Patrick Nyarko scored for Chicago in the 16th minute.

RED BULLS 3, UNION 0

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - Kenny Cooper scored twice, and Thierry Henry added a goal for New York.

The Red Bulls (16-9-9) reached the playoffs for the third straight year, and the ninth time in 10 seasons. New York won all three matches this season against the Union (10-18-6), who lost their final three games and will miss the postseason for the second time in three years.

Cooper scored on a penalty kick in the 13th minute after Tim Cahill was taken down by defender Carlos Valdes in the box a minute earlier. Henry scored his 15th goal to make it 2-0 in the 35th minute.

Cooper added his team-leading 18th goal - and fifth against Philadelphia this season - in the 66th minute.

RAPIDS 2, DYNAMO 0

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (AP) - Kamani Hill and Andre Akpan scored to help Colorado beat playoff-bound Houston.

Colorado (11-19-4) finished one of the worst campaigns in franchise history with only its second two-game winning streak of the year. The Rapids were 3-5-3 in their last 11 games.

Goalkeeper Steward Ceus posted his second shutout in his second career MLS start.

Houston (14-9-11) had already rapped up fifth place in the Eastern Conference and its sixth playoff appearance in seven years. The Dynamo will play Chicago in the wild-card game Wednesday night in Chicago.

Houston rested many of its regulars including its top five goal scorers and starting goalkeeper Tally Hall. Tyler Deric subbed for Hall and made his first career MLS start.

REVOLUTION 1, IMPACT 0

MONTREAL (AP) - A.J. Soares scored in the 89th minute to lift New England past Montreal.

Soares was inside the box to head Chris Tierney's free kick past the reach of goalkeeper Troy Perkins for an unsatisfying end to a game the Impact mostly dominated.

The Revolution (9-17-8) ended a 13-game winless run in road matches and won for the first time in Canada soil, having previously gone 0-5-3 in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.

SANDY, Utah (AP) - Real Salt Lake played to the scoreless draw with Vancouver and made a little bit of history along the way in the regular-season finale.

RSL (17-11-6) became just the second MLS team to not allow a goal in the first 15 minutes of any regular-season match when it held Vancouver (11-13-10) scoreless before halftime. Houston also accomplished the feat in 2009. Both teams qualified for the playoffs.

SHIP BOTTOM, N.J. (AP) ? Forget distinctions like tropical storm or hurricane. Don't get fixated on a particular track. Wherever it hits, the rare behemoth storm inexorably gathering in the eastern U.S. will afflict a third of the country with sheets of rain, high winds and heavy snow, say officials who warned millions in coastal areas to get out of the way.

"We're looking at impact of greater than 50 to 60 million people," said Louis Uccellini, head of environmental prediction for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

As Hurricane Sandy barreled north from the Caribbean ? where it left nearly five dozen dead ? to meet two other powerful winter storms, experts said it didn't matter how strong the storm was when it hit land: The rare hybrid storm that follows will cause havoc over 800 miles from the East Coast to the Great Lakes.

"This is not a coastal threat alone," said Craig Fugate, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. "This is a very large area."

President Barack Obama was monitoring the storm and working with state and locals governments to make sure they get the resources needed to prepare, administration officials said.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie declared a state of emergency Saturday as hundreds of coastal residents started moving inland and the state was set to close its casinos. New York's governor was considering shutting down the subways to avoid flooding and half a dozen states warned residents to prepare for several days of lost power.

Sandy weakened briefly to a tropical storm Saturday but was soon back up to Category 1 strength, packing 75 mph winds. It was about 275 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., and moving northeast at 14 mph as of 2 a.m. Sunday. Forecasters said the storm was spreading tropical storm conditions across the coastline of North Carolina, and they were expected to move up the mid-Atlantic coastline late Sunday. Experts said the storm was most likely to hit the southern New Jersey coastline by late Monday or early Tuesday.

Governors from North Carolina, where heavy rain was expected Sunday, to Connecticut declared states of emergency. Delaware ordered mandatory evacuations for coastal communities by 8 p.m. Sunday.

Christie, who was widely criticized for not interrupting a family vacation in Florida while a snowstorm pummeled the state in 2010, broke off campaigning for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in North Carolina on Friday to return home.

"I can be as cynical as anyone," Christie said in a bit of understatement Saturday. "But when the storm comes, if it's as bad as they're predicting, you're going to wish you weren't as cynical as you otherwise might have been."

The storm forced the presidential campaign to juggle schedules. Romney scrapped plans to campaign Sunday in the swing state of Virginia and switched his schedule for the day to Ohio. First lady Michelle Obama canceled an appearance in New Hampshire for Tuesday, and Obama moved a planned Monday departure for Florida to Sunday night to beat the storm. He canceled appearances in Northern Virginia on Monday and Colorado on Tuesday.

In Ship Bottom, just north of Atlantic City, Alice and Giovanni Stockton-Rossini spent Saturday packing clothing in the backyard of their home, a few hundred yards from the ocean on Long Beach Island. Their neighborhood was under a voluntary evacuation order, but they didn't need to be forced.

"It's really frightening," Alice Stockton-Rossi said. "But you know how many times they tell you, 'This is it, it's really coming and it's really the big one' and then it turns out not to be? I'm afraid people will tune it out because of all the false alarms before ... (but) this one might be the one."

A few blocks away, Russ Linke was taking no chances. He and his wife secured the patio furniture, packed the bicycles into the pickup truck, and headed off the island.

What makes the storm so dangerous and unusual is that it is coming at the tail end of hurricane season and the beginning of winter storm season, "so it's kind of taking something from both," said Jeff Masters, director of the private service Weather Underground.

Masters said the storm could be bigger than the worst East Coast storm on record ? the 1938 New England hurricane known as the Long Island Express, which killed nearly 800 people. "Part hurricane, part nor'easter ? all trouble," he said. Experts said to expect high winds over 800 miles and up to 2 feet of snow as far inland as West Virginia.

And the storm was so big, and the convergence of the three storms so rare, that "we just can't pinpoint who is going to get the worst of it," said Rick Knabb, director of the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Officials are particularly worried about the possibility of subway flooding in New York City, said Uccellini.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo told the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to prepare to shut the city's subways, buses and suburban trains by Sunday, but delayed making a final decision. The city shut the subways down before last year's Hurricane Irene, and a Columbia University study predicted that an Irene surge just 1 foot higher would have paralyzed lower Manhattan.

Up and down the Eastern Seaboard and far inland, officials urged residents and businesses to prepare in big ways and little.

On Saturday evening, Amtrak began canceling train service to parts of the East Coast, including between Washington, D.C., and New York. Airlines started moving planes out of East Coast airports to avoid damage and adding flights out of New York and Washington on Sunday in preparation for flight cancellations on Monday.

The Virginia National Guard was authorized to call up to 500 troops to active duty for debris removal and road-clearing, while homeowners stacked sandbags at their front doors in coastal towns. At a Home Depot in Virginia Beach, employee Dave Jusino said the store was swamped with customers.

"We have organized chaos, is what I call it," Jusino said. "We organize a group of 10 associates, give them certain responsibilities and we just separate the lines, organize four customers at a time, load up their cars and get them out the door and then take the next customers."

Utility officials warned rains could saturate the ground, causing trees to topple into power lines, and told residents to prepare for several days at home without power. "We're facing a very real possibility of widespread, prolonged power outages," said Ruth Miller, spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency.

Warren Ellis, who was on an annual fishing pilgrimage on North Carolina's Outer Banks, didn't act fast enough to get home. Ellis' 73-year-old father managed to get off uninhabited Portsmouth Island near Cape Hatteras by ferry Friday. But the son and his camper got stranded when high winds and surf forced the ferry service to suspend operations Saturday.

"We might not get off here until Tuesday or Wednesday, which doesn't hurt my feelings that much," said Ellis, 44, of Amissville, Va. "Because the fishing's going to be really good after this storm."

Last year, Hurricane Irene poked a new inlet through the island, cutting the only road off Hatteras Island for about 4,000.

In Connecticut, the Naval Submarine Base in Groton prepared to install flood gates and pile up sandbags to protect against flooding while its five submarines remain in port through the storm.

Lobsterman Greg Griffen in Maine wasn't taking any chances; he moved 100 of his traps to deep water, where they are less vulnerable to shifting and damage in a storm.

"Some of my competitors have been pulling their traps and taking them right home," said Griffen. The dire forecast "sort of encouraged them to pull the plug on the season."

In Muncy Valley in northern Pennsylvania, Rich Fry learned his lesson from last year, when Tropical Storm Lee inundated his Katie's Country Store.

In between helping customers picking up necessities Saturday, Fry was moving materials above the flood line. Fry said he was still trying to recover from the losses of last year's storm, when he estimates he lost $35,000 in merchandise.

"It will take a lot of years to cover that," he said.

Christie's emergency declaration will force the shutdown of Atlantic City's 12 casinos for only the fourth time in the 34-year history of legalized gambling here. The approach of Hurricane Irene shut down the casinos for three days last August.

Atlantic City officials said they would begin evacuating the gambling hub's 30,000 residents at noon Sunday, busing them to mainland shelters and schools.

Tom Foley, Atlantic City's emergency management director, recalled the March 1962 storm when the ocean and the bay met in the center of the city.

"This is predicted to get that bad," he said.

Eighty-five-year-old former sailor Ray Leonard said if he had loved ones living in the projected landfall area, he would tell them to leave. Leonard knows to heed the warnings.

He and two crewmates in his 32-foot sailboat, Satori, rode out 1991's infamous "perfect storm," made famous by the Sebastian Junger bestseller of the same name, before being plucked from the Atlantic off Martha's Vineyard, Mass., by a Coast Guard helicopter.

"Don't be rash," Leonard said in a telephone interview Saturday from his home in Fort Myers, Fla. "Because if this does hit, you're going to lose all those little things you've spent the last 20 years feeling good about."

(AP) ? Shawn Williams' criticism will be remembered as a challenge.

And No. 12 Georgia responded better than anyone could have expected.

Five days after Williams ripped his defensive teammates for playing too soft, the Bulldogs turned in their best performance of the season ? one that will go down in Florida-Georgia lore.

The Bulldogs stuffed the third-ranked Gators from every angle, forcing six turnovers in a 17-9 victory Saturday that left them on the cusp of the Southeastern Conference championship game.

Call it the World's Largest Outdoor Turnover Party, and it gave Georgia consecutive wins in the heated rivalry for the first time since 1989. These have to be two of the more significant victories of coach Mark Richt's tenure.

"I'd say we're not soft," Richt said. "The defense rose to the occasion. ... Our seniors played well, and I know it's a game they'll remember for the rest of their lives."

The victory, just the fifth in the last 23 meetings for Georgia, gave them a chance for even bigger accomplishments.

The Bulldogs (7-1, 5-1 SEC) can clinch the East and a spot in the conference title game with wins against Mississippi and Auburn the next two weeks.

If Georgia plays defense like it did against Florida ? it was the first time since 1988 that UGA held the Gators without a touchdown ? getting to Atlanta should be a mere formality.

"Shawn challenged us and we took it personal," Jarvis Jones said. "As men, when another man challenges you, it will be personal. The guys stepped up to the challenge."

The Bulldogs did little on offense until Aaron Murray found Malcolm Mitchell for a 45-yard touchdown with 7:11 remaining that put them ahead 17-9. Mitchell spun out of Loucheiz Purifoy's tackle attempt and went mostly untouched the rest of the way. Florida kept the drive alive with Dominique Easley's holding penalty on third down.

Georgia sealed it with ? what else? ? a defensive play.

Jones knocked the ball out of Jordan Reed's hands at the 5-yard line, and teammate Sanders Commings recovered in the end zone with 2:05 left.

"When I saw him make the first guy miss, I thought he was going to score," Florida quarterback Jeff Driskel said. "He didn't take care of the ball, just like the whole team didn't all night."

Jones had another huge game against Florida (7-1, 6-1). The junior, who had four sacks in last year's 24-20 victory, finished with 13 tackles, three sacks and two forced fumbles.

"I had a great game, but it's about what we did as a defense," Jones said. "All of us did what we came here to do. ... It's a great feeling."

Williams' harsh words didn't go over well with coaches and teammates. He probably had a point after Georgia allowed at least 20 points in six of its first seven games and gave up 206 yards rushing last week at Kentucky.

Jones missed that game with a sprained ankle. With him back, Georgia looked like a different defense, and it surely helped that Florida self-destructed at every turn.

The Gators got behind early. Driskel fumbled twice on Florida's first three plays. Georgia recovered the second one, which set up Todd Gurley's 10-yard touchdown run.

Driskel, who completed 14 of 26 passes for 185 yards, lost another fumble, threw two interceptions and was sacked five times.

His first interception came at the end of the first half and with the Gators at the 5-yard line. Driskel rolled right on second down and threw across his body and into the end zone. Bacarri Rambo picked off the pass.

Driskel's next drive ended the same way. Under heavy pressure, he floated one over the middle that Damian Swann intercepted. It set up a Georgia field goal that made it 10-6.

Wildcat quarterback Trey Burton fumble on the ensuing possession, but Marshall Morgan missed a 37-yard attempt.

"We're capable of playing like this week in and week out," Jones said. "We should have been playing like this all year."

When the game was over, Richt and his players celebrated in every corner of EverBank Field.

"I wanted to stick around and enjoy it," Richt said. "I wanted our players to enjoy it. When you have a game like that and you have the type of success we had, you want to celebrate. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. We definitely weren't trying to taunt anyone. We were just trying to celebrate with our fans."

Georgia had plenty of anxious moments before the party started.

The Gators intercepted three passes from Murray, who completed 12 of 24 passes for 150 yards, but managed just two field goals off those turnovers. Georgia also was flagged 14 times for 132 yards.

Florida made it 10-9 on Caleb Sturgis' 50-yard field goal in the fourth, but Driskel's mistakes proved to be too much to overcome.

The Gators, who turned the ball over just four times in their first seven games, had four in the first 36 minutes Saturday.

And with Mike Gillislee (77 yards) mostly bottled up, the Gators had no choice but to put the ball in Driskel's hands.

"Six turnovers. Wow," Florida coach Will Muschamp said. "That's tough to overcome. We've got to find better ways to run the football, which we did in seven of eight games this year."

Muschamp noted all season how small his team's margin for error was. It really showed as the Gators got behind early and failed to make a comeback. The Gators had been 3-0 when trailing at halftime, but they didn't make the same successful halftime adjustments that carried them in wins against Texas A&M, Tennessee and LSU.

Georgia did.

"I think our guys were very serious about playing with intensity," Richt said. "They played with physicality. They were accused of some things that guys don't like to be accused of, and that probably helped motivate them."
