The Italian Nobel prize-winning neurologist Rita Levi-Montalcini has died at the age of 103.
Miss Levi-Montalcini lived through anti-semitic discrimination under fascism to become one of Italy's top scientists and most respected figures.
She won acclaim for her work on cells, which furthered understanding of a range of conditions, including cancer.
In 1986 she shared the Nobel prize for medicine with biochemist Stanley Cohen for research carried out in the US.
Her niece, Piera Levi-Montalcini, told La Stampa newspaper that she had died peacefully "as if sleeping" after lunch.
Her aunt had continued to carry out several hours of research every day until her death, she said.
Rita Levi-Montalcini was born in 1909 to a wealthy Jewish family in the northern city of Turin, where she studied medicine.
But after she graduated in 1936 the fascist government banned Jews from academic and professional careers, and Miss Levi-Montalcini set up a makeshift laboratory in her bedroom, experimenting on chicken embryos.
"She worked in primitive conditions," Italian astrophysicist Margherita Hack told Italian TV. "She is really someone to be admired."
'Charismatic and tenacious'Miss Levi-Montalcini's family lived underground in Florence after the Germans invaded Italy in 1943. She later worked as doctor for the allied forces that liberated the city, treating refugees.

From 1947 she was based for more than 20 years in the US, at Washington University in Saint Louis, Missouri. There she discovered nerve growth factor, which regulates the growth of cells.
She later worked at the National Council of Scientific Research in Rome.
Her research was recognised to have advanced the understanding of conditions including tumours, malformations and senile dementia.
In 2001 she was nominated to the Italian upper house of parliament as a senator for life, an honour bestowed on some of Italy's most distinguished public figures.
She was an ambassador for the Rome-based UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, and founded the Levi-Montalcini Foundation, which carries out charity work in Africa.
Miss Levi-Montalcini never married, saying her life had been "enriched by excellent human relations, work and interests".
In a 2009 interview she said: "At 100, I have a mind that is superior - thanks to experience - than when I was 20."
Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti praised Miss Levi-Montalcini's "charismatic and tenacious" character and her lifelong battle to "defend the battles in which she believed".

Growing up in Coney Island, NY, William Caballero describes himself as being an artsy, quirky and nerdy kid who got on everyone?s nerves. Although he always loved his Puerto Rican-American family dearly, he says he always felt like an outsider looking in.
He had to look no further than to his not-so-perfect family for inspiration for his first feature-length documentary. ?On December 30,??American Dreams Deferred??will be premiering in 26 states on?PBS World Channel.
?From a young age, I always felt a need to express myself through my various artistic gifts ? drawing, playing the violin, making my own entertainment,? says the 29-year-old filmmaker, composer, animator, writer and educator.
Caballero received the prestigious?Bill Gates Millenium Scholarship?- which allowed him to get his bachelor and masters degrees, at no cost, making his dreams of becoming a documentary maker, a reality. ?His documentary details his family financial and emotional struggles, and how for many in his family, their dreams never materialized.
Caballero?s dad suffered from diabetes since as young as he can remember, and when?Caballero was 15, his dad?s health worsened, and he and his parents, had to move to a trailer behind his grandmother?s backyard in Fayetteville, NC.
?I went through some cultural confusion when I left Coney Island,? says Caballero, who continued to feel like he didn?t belong.
He says everything started making more sense once he started college ? first the Pratt Institute, where he majored in digital arts, and then New York University, where he took the documentary class which led him to pitch the idea?of making?a film about his family.
?I?m the voice of my parents mostly,? says Caballero, who had to convince his teacher that they would make good subjects for his film. ?When you realize you surpassed how far your parents will go, a certain responsibility comes with it. The gifts you are given, the skills you get from your craft, you should use them to help your parents in particular.?
He says he grew tired of seeing his parents pushed around by the healthcare system.
?Even now, I feel like I could be doing more,? says the young filmmaker. ?I want this film to be an expos? on the financial struggles they go through?I wanted to show what they go through in a year, and maybe one day one person will watch it and help out, and for my cousin like Jay (who was formerly incarcerated and a drug addict), to show you can achieve success, but it does take hard work to get there.?
He says for him to see his family members so open and honest was a learning experience for him as well. Over the five years it took for him to make the film, Caballero says he realized although his heroes were Mozart and Picasso, it was having strong parents who disciplined him and nurtured his creative side, that allowed him to achieve his American Dream. He says he also realized for a lot of people in his family, they didn?t have the same support or curiosity to see what was beyond their norm.
?They sort of live in a bubble from what they hear on the media and mainstream culture,? says Caballero who tries to educate them about the dangers of fast food in particular. ?My family doesn?t question anything? They are sort of set in their ways.?
But what he says he?wants people to take away from the film is to see the connections in their families.
?We all have family members who are gay, have abused drugs, my cousin has two books available on Amazon?,? says Caballero about his documentary. ?One thing I hope people get out of this is that it is universal.?
Caballero?s short film, ?Seed Story? was also chosen for the prestigious 2013 Slamdance Film Festival. It?s shot in macro perspective without using real people.
?I try new things? These figures relive the history of the world ? religion, capitalism?historical illusions,? says the quirky artist. ?I?m still trying to figure out what I want to do in my future, but I want to be known for someone who does work that is artistic but rings true to what is happening in the world.?

International trade ? especially the addition of China to the World Trade Organization in 2001 ? has sharply boosted coal mining.
By Gail Tverberg,?Guest blogger / December 29, 2012
EnlargeA primary reason why coal consumption is rising is because of increased international trade, starting when the World Trade Organization was formed in 1995, and greatly ramping up when China was added in December 2001. Figure 1 shows world fossil fuel extraction for the three fossil fuels. A person can see a sharp ?bend? in the coal line, immediately after China was added to the World Trade Organization (see Figure 1, above). China?s data also?shows a sharp increase in coal use?at that time.

China and many other Asian countries had not previously industrialized. The advent of international trade gave them opportunities to make and sell goods below the cost of other countries. In order to do this, they needed fuel, however. The fuel the West had used when it industrialized was coal. Coal had many advantages for a newly industrialized countries: it often can be extracted without advanced technology; it is relatively cheap to extract; and it is often available locally. It can be used to make many of the basic items used by industrialized countries, including steel, concrete, and electricity.
The industrialization of Asian countries was pushed along by many forces. Companies in the West were eager to have a way to make goods cheaper. Buyers were happy with lower prices. Even the?Kyoto Protocol?tended to push international trade along. This document made it clear that countries signing the document wouldn?t be in the market for coal. From the point of the developing countries, this would help hold coal prices down (at least in the export market). It also likely meant a better long-term supply of coal for developing countries. The Kyoto Protocol offered no penalties for exporting products made with coal, so it put countries that used coal to make products for export in a better competitive position. This was especially the case if Kyoto Protocol countries used carbon taxes to make their own products higher priced.
LONDON (AP) ? Pearson, the U.K. publisher and education company, is to take a 5 percent stake in Barnes & Noble's NOOK e-reader as technology companies seek new inroads into the potentially lucrative business of digital textbooks for schools.
Pearson PLC will pay $89.5 million cash for a 5 percent stake in NOOK Media LLC which includes the bookseller's e-reader and tablets, its digital bookstore and its 674 stores serving U.S. colleges. Barnes & Noble will hold 78.2 percent of the business and Microsoft will have about 16.8 percent, the company said Friday.
Major tech companies have looked for inroads into the industry, seeing tablets like the iPad and the NOOK as replacements for the dozens of books that students must lug to and from school each day.
Walter Isaacson in his biography of Steve Jobs wrote about meetings between the co-founder of Apple Inc. and major publishers to accomplish just that before his death last year.
Janney Capital Markets described the tie-up between Pearson and Barnes & Noble as an "online education dream team."
"After this investment from Pearson, it is more clear that Nook Media has its sight set on transforming the way education is administered in the U.S. and around the world," analyst David Strasser wrote.
Pearson is the largest higher educational publisher in the world and the largest in kindergarten-through-high school publisher in the United States, Janney said. The company, which also owns the Financial Times and whose Penguin book brand is in the process of being merged with Random House, reported that its textbooks and training made 1.9 billion pounds ($3 billion) in revenue the first six months of 2012.
Will Ethridge, CEO of Pearson North America, says his company had worked with Barnes & Noble for decades and have invested heavily in providing engaging and effective digital reading experiences.
"It is another example of our strategy of making our content and services broadly available to students and faculty through a wide range of distribution partners," Ethridge said.
Barnes & Noble Inc. has invested heavily in the Nook e-reader. It has faced tough competition from online retailers like Amazon.com and discount stores, with shoppers moving away from traditional books in favor of electronic books.

When choosing to purchase a business, you will need to decide whether you will purchase a venture through a real estate company or other professional means or if you will buy an FSBO. FSBO stands for ?For Sale By Owner? and refers to a business being marketed and sold directly by the venture owner themselves. This can be a fantastic option when investing in entrepreneurship; however there are many setbacks as well. Pros and cons of FSBO opportunities include:
Pros
1. Price ? When someone choses to use an agent or broker to sell their business, franchise or venture the agent will always charge fees for their service of marketing and selling their property. This will almost always cause the price of the business to be higher than if you had bought it directly from the owner (FSBO). In short, the price of the business will be lower on average and will save you money.
2. Time ? The process of buying FSBO businesses is likely to be a lot shorter as communications are directly between the business owner and prospect owner without the lengthy involvement of a business broker/agent. Note: It is advised that both buyer and seller should have their legal advisors confirm verify the financial information and purchase/transfer agreement.
Cons
1. Price ? Many business owners may be ill-informed or ignorant about the value of their business and upon selling it through the FSBO method, end up over-pricing it. Commercial brokerages and professional commercial agents can assess and evaluate businesses properly as they have the proper experience and knowledge to do so. This way, you will not lose money on the cost of purchase.
2. Information Accuracy- When purchasing a business from its owner, it is hard to verify the authenticity and accuracy of everything that is advertised, along with other information you may receive. Business owners often exaggerate profits and popularity while leaving out any hidden problems. This can leave you disappointed and potentially cause you to lose of a lot of money. Having a commercial broker or professional intermediary to assist the process will help validate financial information as well as reviewing legal documents and agreements.
3. Negotiation ? During negotiations in the FSBO process, there may be points when negotiation is rocky and the process comes to a stall. The advice of an experienced third party such as the previously mentioned broker or agent, negotiations will likely become quicker and the broker can help to make the sale.
4. ?Due Diligence? ? Before deciding to invest money in a business, it is highly advised that a buyer first perform ?due diligence? on the business, a complete and thorough review and investigative report of the business and its past. Due diligence is often made difficult when you have interest in a FSBO business; this takes a lot of skill and time which only a commercial agent or broker may have. This becomes an advantage to using a brokerage service.

BEIJING (AP) ? China has opened the world's longest high-speed rail line, which more than halves the time required to travel from the country's capital in the north to Guangzhou, an economic hub in southern China.
Wednesday's opening of the 2,298 kilometer (1,428 mile)-line was commemorated by the 9 a.m. departure of a train from Beijing for Guangzhou. Another train left Guangzhou for Beijing an hour later.
China has massive resources and considerable prestige invested in its showcase high-speed railways program.
But it has in recent months faced high-profile problems: part of a line collapsed in central China after heavy rains in March, while a bullet train crash in the summer of 2011 killed 40 people. The former railway minister, who spearheaded the bullet train's construction, and the ministry's chief engineer, were detained in an unrelated corruption investigation months before the crash.
Trains on the latest high-speed line will initially run at 300 kph (186 mph) with a total travel time of about eight hours. Before, the fastest time between the two cities by train was more than 20 hours.
The line also makes stops in major cities along the way, including provincial capitals Shijiazhuang, Wuhan and Changsha.
More than 150 pairs of high-speed trains will run on the new line every day, the official Xinhua News Agency said, citing the Ministry of Railways.
Rail is an essential part in China's transportation system, and the government plans to build a grid of high-speed railways with four east-west lines and four north-south lines by 2020.
The opening of the new line brings the total distance covered by China's high-speed railway system to more than 9,300 km (5,800 miles) ? about half its 2015 target of 18,000 km.

Wooden hockey sticks smack into rubber pucks as the metal blades of skates slice through the ice. The sounds echo through an empty arena in the Czech capital Prague in late November as a visiting hockey team prepares for another game in the Kontinental Hockey League.
But this is no ordinary squad. This is Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, a Russian team that was literally wiped out last year in an air tragedy that shocked the hockey world.
On Sept. 7, 2011, the team was set to fly to Minsk to play their first game of the new season amid high hopes of adding to its league titles from the 1990s. But the team?s plane, a Yak-42, never gained proper altitude and slammed into a tower. It went down in flames about a mile from Tunoshna Airport in Yaroslavl, Russia.

Forty-five people on board died, among them some of the greats of the game, including Slovakia?s Pavol Demitra; Ruslan Salei, a hero back home in Belarus; and three Czech players with world championship medals. Only the flight engineer survived.
A government investigation found one of the pilots had literally stepped on the brakes, dragging the plane down when it should have been going up. It later emerged the pilot and co-pilot were not properly trained to fly the Yak-42, and had forged documents to prove otherwise.

The crash provoked much soul-searching in Russia with then-President Dmitry Medvedev calling for an urgent upgrade of the country?s passenger jets.
More immediately for Lokomotiv, it left the club without its senior players or coaches. Of the entire senior roster, only one coach and one player, both of whom had stayed behind, were left.
REBUILDING
But now, just a year on, Lokomotiv is not only playing, but winning as well, sitting near the top of the Western Conference of the mostly Russian Kontinental Hockey League.
Tim Rowe, their American coach, credits Lokomotiv President Yuri Yakovlev with assembling a squad from scratch that can compete in the KHL, considered by hockey cognoscenti to be the world?s top league currently playing, as the NHL remains mired in a labor dispute between owners and players.
After the crash, Mr. Yakovlev rejected a KHL offer to craft a replacement team assembled with players from other KHL teams, along with some of Lokomotiv?s junior players. Instead, the junior team played last year in Russia?s Major Hockey League ? the country?s top minor league, all with the hope of returning to the top flight this season.
And return they did, bouncing back even stronger than management had hoped.
?I knew we would have a good team; Mr. Yakovlev has been active signing good players. But even I?m surprised how quickly this team has gelled,? explains Mr. Rowe.
'A SEASON DEDICATED TO THOSE GUYS'
Rowe cites a form of divine intervention for the team?s success. "I'm not being strange when I say this, I think we're getting some help from up above in the type of season we're having."
They're definitely looking out over us, and it's a good feeling," he says. "There's a calmness over this team every night that I haven't been around too often, and it's an awful lot of fun to be a part of it.?
Recommended: Do you know anything about Russia? A quiz.
Rowe was particularly impacted by the tragedy, being a friend of Brad McCrimmon, the team's Canadian coach who died in the crash. Mr. McCrimmon was set to start his first season with the team.
Russian Viktor Kozlov was playing for another team, Salavat Yulaev, last year when league commissioner Alexander Medvedev interrupted its first game to announce to disbelieving fans and players alike what had happened just a bit earlier in the day in Yaroslavl.
?I was shocked by the news. We all were. We couldn?t believe it,? says Mr. Kozlov, who plied his skills for years in the NHL.
Now, a year later, Kozlov is with Lokomotiv. Kozlov says he joined the team, partly for the chance to be part of the team?s rebirth. He says although life goes on, the former team must not be forgotten.
He points to a charity match played earlier in the year in Zlin, in the Czech Republic. That was the hometown of Karel Rachunek, one of three Czech players to die in the crash. "Yeah, of course, we remember the guys, like Karel Rachunek, with the game with Zlin."
Canadian Mark Flood says the constant reminders ? including the ringing of a bell before each home game to honor the fallen players ? are all part of what motivates the team.
"Every home game we have a little ceremony for the team that passed away last year. So, we're reminded of it every day," explains Mr. Flood. "Definitely our season is dedicated to those guys."

HONOLULU (AP) ? With a yearend deadline looming before the economy goes over the so-called fiscal cliff, President Barack Obama is cutting short his traditional Christmas holiday in Hawaii, planning to leave for Washington on Wednesday evening.
Obama was expected to arrive in Washington early Thursday, the White House said late Tuesday. First lady Michelle Obama and the couple's two daughters are scheduled to remain in Hawaii until Jan. 6.
In the past, the president's end-of-the-year holiday in his native state had stretched into the new year. The first family left Washington last Friday night.
Congress was expected to return to Washington on Thursday. Before he departed for Hawaii, Obama told reporters he expected to be back in the capital this week.
Without action by Obama and Congress, automatic budget cuts and tax increases are set to begin in January, which many economists say could send the country back into recession. So far, the president and congressional Republicans have been unable to reach agreement on any alternatives.
Lawmakers have expressed little but pessimism for the prospect of an agreement coming before Jan. 1. On Sunday, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, said she expects any action in the waning days of the year to be "a patch because in four days we can't solve everything."
With the collapse last week of House Speaker John Boehner's plan to allow tax rates to rise on million-dollar-plus incomes, lawmakers were increasingly worried that no deal can be reached.
They were already preparing their arguments about who is to blame if the new year comes without an agreement.
Obama already has scaled back his ambitions for a sweeping budget bargain. Before leaving the capital on Friday, he called for a limited measure that extends George W. Bush-era tax cuts for most people and staves off federal spending cuts.
The Obamas were spending the holiday at a rented home near Honolulu. On Christmas Day, the president and first lady visited with members of the military to express thanks for their service.
"One of my favorite things is always coming to base on Christmas Day just to meet you and say 'thank you,'" the president said at Marine Corps Base Hawaii's Anderson Hall. He said that being commander in chief was his greatest honor as president.
Obama took photos with individual service members and their families.
On Christmas Eve, Obama called members of the military to thank them for serving the nation, then joined his family for dinner, the White House said. The Obamas opened gifts Christmas morning, ate breakfast and sang carols.
Friends were joining the Obamas for Christmas dinner Tuesday night, the White House said.

Dan Stevens (as Matthew Crawley) and Michelle Dockery (as Lady Mary Crawley) in "Downton Abbey."
By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor
Looks like "Downton Abbey" may have to hunt down a new heir: A?spokesperson for the hugely popular PBS series has confirmed to Deadline that star Dan Stevens (who plays Matthew Crawley) has not re-signed for the series' fourth season.
Note: Potential spoilers ahead.
Season three of the series ended its run in the UK with a Christmas special that aired there Tuesday and, according to Deadline, "explains Matthew's exit." Season three of the series begins airing in the U.S. on Jan. 6, which means that American fans will have to wait some months before learning how he'll depart.
The exit isn't entirely unexpected; back in October Stevens hedged about whether he'd re-up: "I think we'll have to wait and see really," he told the Wall Street Journal about that fourth season. "You do feel a certain obligation to shows that raise your profile like 'Downton' has. But there are definitely other exciting opportunities out there."
"Downton's" fourth season is set to begin shooting in winter 2013. Meanwhile, Stevens has already been expanding his resume, appearing on Broadway with Jessica Chastain in "The Heiress," and starring in and executive producing the upcoming independent film "Summer in February."

Marketing podcast with Guy Kawasaki
I asked the question contained in the title of this post in a community I moderate on Google+ (Consultant Exchange- join us if you are a coach or consultant)
Somewhat predictably answers fell into two camps ? those with a book said yes it was very helpful and meaningful to their business. Those without a book said no they didn?t think it was necessary and that a well written blog might be more important.
In my business having a book (and now three) made a significant difference in terms of creating more speaking, branding and consulting opportunities. Now, a key measure in the equation is that these books are well regarded and sold well enough to stand on their own ? but there?s no question my books have led to a bigger brand for Duct Tape Marketing.
I posed the same question to my friend Guy Kawasaki and his take was a little more reserved ? ?Writing a book to open other opportunities is the wrong reason to write a book. You should write a book because you have something to say or are passionate about promoting a cause or idea.?
Kawasaki has written twelve books, including the just released APE: Author, Publisher, Entrepreneur ? How to Publish a Book. Kawasaki wrote the book to reveal everything he?s learned along the way as an author and entrepreneur with the added lessons gained from publishing his last two books without the aid of the traditional publishing machine.
APE is meant to introduce the concept of ?artisinal publishing? as a powerful avenue for anyone wishing to get their message heard in the form of a book much like an artist practicing and promoting their craft might do.
As someone that?s written several books I can tell you that if you have a desire to write a book, but have no desire to publish on your own, the section on writing a book is worth the money. If you do plan to write and publish your own work the guidance on the very specific elements of editing, formatting and submitting digital books is a gold mine.
I do believe that we have come to a point where honing and communicating a specific point of view is an essential practice in the worlds of coaching, consulting and marketing and a book is one format to do so.
More importantly perhaps is that you practice your craft in a way that allows you to gain the experience and insight needed to construct a point of view worth sharing ? do that and you?re on your way to writing that book.

In today?s Information age, the human life has become so much high-tech that we feel it as an eminent part and parcel of our life. The education system is no different. Science and technology has given tremendous boost to the education sector, worldwide. Gone are the days when notebook only meant for paper bind booklet, now notebooks refers to smaller versions of laptop. Indeed the electronic gadgets have started making their strong presence, especially in education sector.
Some of the gadgets used in education today are described below-
1. Computers: The index for human literacy in the current scenario is acknowledged to be the ?knowledge of computers?. They have thoroughly changed the face of education. A person without the knowledge of computers is as good as an illiterate in the present scenario. They laid the basis of information age when they were introduced to the general public, few decades ago. Realizing this fact, people in Europe have started pursuing the A Level Courseswith great zeal. In every classroom there exists a computer. Many students pursue online educational courses with the help of these computers.
2. Mobile Phones: I am quite sure that Graham Bell would have had never imagined that people would get educated due to his invention. The mobiles phone today, are not just used to communicate with each other. Smart phones are in now. People learn on the move. They pursue their online courses while moving. The mobile phones have certainly made education system portable. The smart phones with specific configurations are used to view educational videos, slides and presentations. Not just that it also allows students to discuss with each other on educational topics. And this happens on the move.
3. Tablets: Tablets are a step ahead of mobile phones in terms of online education. Being bigger in size it provides a better interface for the e-learners. The high quality graphics of the tablets overcome the drawback of mobile phones. They are portable and compact too and hence are considered as the best gadgets to pursue online training. Although one can?t compare it with mobile phones yet they have an edge over the later, at least in terms of online education. With its price coming down steeply they will be a great boon for e-learners.
4. Laptops: Laptops are currently, very widely used as educational gadget. Most of the students in
A Level Training?and in further education carry a laptop. One can?t carry computers along with him, this reason led to the invention of laptops. Laptops are used in education in abundance these days because they are much powerful than computers and much portable too.
5. Projectors: Gone are the days when students would learn in classrooms over the blackboards. The white boards are seen in every class these days. These white boards are used for the projectors which are attached with one of the above mentioned gadgets. These projectors enlarge the graphics of an image, video, presentations etc. and make the classroom learning interesting and effective. Truly the education system of today, has become high-tech.

WEBSTER, N.Y. (AP) ? An ex-con killed two firefighters with the same caliber and make military-style rifle used in the Connecticut school massacre after typing a note pledging to burn down his neighborhood and "do what I like doing best, killing people," police said Tuesday as another body, believed to be the gunman's missing sister, was found.
William Spengler, 62, who served 17 years in prison for manslaughter in the 1980 hammer slaying of his grandmother, set his house afire before dawn Christmas Eve before taking a revolver, a shotgun and a semiautomatic rifle to a sniper position outside, Police Chief Gerald Pickering said.
The death toll rose to three as police revealed that a body believed to be the killer's 67-year-old sister, Cheryl Spengler, was found in his fire-ravaged home.
Authorities say he sprayed bullets at the first responders, killing two firefighters and injuring two others who remained hospitalized Tuesday in stable condition, awake and alert and expected to survive. He then killed himself as seven houses burned on a sliver of land along Lake Ontario.
Police recovered a military-style .223-caliber semiautomatic Bushmaster rifle with flash suppression, the same make and caliber weapon used in the elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn., that killed 26, including 20 young children, Pickering said.
The chief said it was believed the firefighters were hit with shots from the rifle given the distance but the investigation was incomplete.
"He was equipped to go to war, kill innocent people," the chief said.
The two- to three-page typewritten rambling note left by Spengler did not reveal what set off the killer or provide a motive for the shootings, Pickering said. He called the attack a "clear ambush on first responders."
He declined to reveal the note's full content or say where it was found. He read only one chilling line: "I still have to get ready to see how much of the neighborhood I can burn down, and do what I like doing best, killing people."
Pickering said it was unclear whether the person believed to be Spengler's sister died before or during the fire.
"It was a raging inferno in there," Pickering said.
A next-door neighbor said Spengler hated his sister and they lived on opposite sides of the house.
Roger Vercruysse said Spengler loved his mother, Arline, who died in October after living with her son and daughter in the house in a neighborhood of seasonal and year-round homes across the road from a lakeshore popular with recreational boaters.
As Pickering described it and as emergency radio communications on the scene showed, the heavily armed Spengler took a position behind a small hill by the house as four firefighters arrived after 5:30 a.m. to extinguish the fire: two on a fire truck; two in their own vehicles.
They were immediately greeted by bullets from Spengler, who wore dark clothing. Volunteer firefighter and police Lt. Michael Chiapperini, 43, driving the truck, was killed by gunfire as the windshield before him was shattered. Also killed was Tomasz Kaczowka, 19, who worked as a 911 dispatcher.
Several firefighters went beneath the truck to shield themselves as an off-duty police officer who was passing by pulled his vehicle alongside the truck to try to shield them, authorities said.
The first police officer who arrived chased and exchanged shots with Spengler, recounting it later over his police radio.
"I could see the muzzle blasts comin' at me. ... I fired four shots at him. I thought he went down," the officer said.
At another point, he said: "I don't know if I hit him or not. He's by a tree. ... He was movin' eastbound on the berm when I was firing shots." Pickering portrayed him as a hero who saved many lives.
The audio posted on the website RadioReference.com also has someone reporting "firefighters are down" and saying "got to be rifle or shotgun ? high-powered ... semi or fully auto."
Spengler had been charged with murder in his grandmother's death but pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter, apparently to spare his family a trial. After he was freed from prison, Spengler ? a felon who wasn't allowed to possess weapons ? had lived a quiet life on Lake Road on a narrow peninsula where Irondequoit Bay meets Lake Ontario.
That ended when he left his burning home Monday morning, armed with his three weapons and a lot of ammunition.
"I'm not sure we'll ever know what was going through his mind," Pickering said.

To be a great wrestler, you have to know the rules of stand-up wrestling. Basically, all of it begins on the feet. You could know the correct positions. You have to be in the perfect situation, so that it is possible for you to to undertake essentially the most efficient and efficient wrestling postures. These are the positions or postures that you simply want with the intention to defeat your opponent. By figuring out these postures, it is possible for you to to anticipate your opponent?s transfer and put together for his attacks.
?On Your Toes?
Strictly talking, being on your feet in wrestling would require you to have your elbows in, chin tucked, knees bent and lead leg forward. You should just be sure you maintain your arms near your body. It will help protect you in opposition to having your opponent grabbing onto your arms and taking control of the fight. All the time keep your arms near your body. Don?t simply allow them to dangle in your sides or your front. You?ll want to have your opponent work for it. Wait to your opponent to increase his arms to be able to grab you. Inadvertently, this can go away him open to your attack. That is if you take the chance to assault him.
?Never Take Your Eyes off Your Opponent?
Rule of the thumb in relation to wrestling: Never Look Down! Do not have a look at the floor. Wherever the top goes, the physique follows. You must also avoid wanting up because this place exposes your throat. Stand-up wrestling requires quick thinking. You need to know tips on how to mess together with your opponent?s head. A good wrestler will seemingly pull his opponent?s head in different directions just so to get a response out of his opponent. Having your head manipulated this manner messes with a wrestler?s focus and stability. This is why it is vital that you?ve a strong neck. That is the place neck workout routines help a lot.
?Saddle Your Opponent Your Weight?
Your opponent is your mule if you end up inside the ring. It?s essential let him carry your weight. If you happen to weight 600 lbs, then saddle him with every pound. Do not forget that wrestling is about ?wrestling management? away from your opponent. It?s good to be in management, so you?ll be capable to hook him. You?ll want to anticipate his moves, so that you?ll know how you can respond. That?s how you win in opposition to your opponent.

Groupon's stock was up 23% today.
Bloomberg is reporting there's speculation that Google might take over Groupon.
Two years ago, Google wanted to buy Groupon for $6 billion, but was rejected. Today, the company is worth $3 billion. While growth has slowed, its core business is bigger. Google might think that it could buy Groupon, shutter the underperforming businesses and fix the flaws.?
Or, this could just be chatter. Bloomberg doesn't really source where the speculation is coming from.

New research indicates that a species of invasive grass is making wildfires in the western US larger, hotter and more frequent.
Scientists say that a variety called cheatgrass dries out and burns more rapidly than other vegetation.
They believe it has fuelled almost 80% of the largest fires in the west over the last 10 years.
Researchers are looking at a range of solutions including using a fungus to attack the grass seed.
Originally transported to the US in soils on board ocean going ships, the noxious, weedy grass continued its journey west in the 1800s with settlers and cattle ranchers.
Continue reading the main storyEnd Quote Dr Jennifer Balch Penn State University Smoking grassCheatgrass promotes fires that are easily ignited, and spread rapidly?
The species gets its name because it grows very early and very quickly and then dies, cheating other varieties out of valuable nutrients.
It is widely dispersed throughout the Great Basin of the American west, an area of 600,000 sq km that covers parts of Nevada and Utah, Colorado, Idaho, California and Oregon.
Scientists have long suspected that it played a key role in wildfires but this report is the most definitive evidence yet. Researchers used satellite imagery from Nasa to compare burnt areas with regions where cheatgrass dominates.
According to lead author Dr Jennifer Balch from Penn State University, the connection between the two was clear.
"We were able to pick out this species from space because it dries out earlier than native species," she told BBC News. "We looked at all the really big fires, all the ones over 100 sq km in size and Cheatgrass influenced the majority of those, it's fuelling those really big fires."
Over the period from 2000 to 2009 Dr Balch and her colleagues say that cheatgrass influenced 39 of the 50 largest wildfires.
"Cheatgrass promotes fires that are easily ignited, and spread rapidly." she said. "They cover large areas and across this landscape that translates to more frequent fires."
Cheating by dyingThe research suggests that cheatgrass and fires are in a mutually beneficial relationship.
Michael Kodas is an author and expert on wildfires in the western US. He agrees that cheatgrass is fire-dependent.
"I think the fires are believed to help the cheatgrass outcompete other species and expand its range faster, he told BBC News. "Basically the fires help speed the invasion."
Mr Kodas argues that the invasive species is extending the fire season across the Great Basin.
"Cheatgrass grows and dies earlier in the season," he said. "When native grasses and other plants are greening up and moist, it's already sprouted, spread its seed, and died. So after cheatgrass invades, wildfires can occur earlier in the season, when the native vegetation is still green and unlikely to burn."
Scientists are now working on ways of containing the threat and are investigating a range of control methods says Dr Balch.
